What does a policy scientist do?
Policy-relevant questions tend to be very current and macro - they are normally
asked by government agencies and arise from immediate or near-term problems.
After first getting to understand the client's question, I conceptualize
the problem, review the literature, establish the variables, model the relationships, draw up some hypotheses, design
the empirical research, gather the data, analyze the data, and pubish a report. Altogether, this usually takes more than
one year.
These same thorough scientific methods are just as relevant to the historical analysis used
in this book.
